All Packed with a Paxette

The city of York has long been a favourite location, so when the kids suggested an anniversary treat the choice was obvious. However which camera to take was not so clear.

I finally decided to take the Braun Paxette II an interchangeable lens rangefinder camera hailing from the 1950’s. To keep things as simple as possible I took one lens a 45mm f2.8 Staeble-Kata lens along with my trusty Weston Master III light meter to help with getting the right exposure. The Paxette is small but quite substantial in the hand.

When you hold the camera up to the eye you lookout of what is the right hand window in the photo above. This is slightly different to what the lens “sees” and is technically known as parallax. From the first two photos its clear I need to work on this.

Holgate Windmill
Just outside of York and still working
Shame about cutting off the sails !
York Minster..or part of it.

I found using the Paxette to be a slower process. You have to estimate the distance of your subject and using the light meter you get the exposure. I found it typically took about a minute to accomplish this and then be ready to take a photo. I had a bit more success with the following photos.

Petergate
All of Clifford’s Tower
York Railway Station.

We had a great time in York. That is more than can be said for my handling of the Paxette! I enjoyed using the camera. BrThe camera did exactly what it was asked to do. Not being able to see through the lens was my issue. Clearly I need to have a little more practice , oh well I’ll just have to go again.
