2005

Do you remember what you were doing in 2005? It was the year Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles and it was 200 years since the battle of Trafalgar. At the cinemas you could watch the remake of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Tony Christie was riding high in the music charts with Is This The Way to Amarillo.

It was also the probable year that the subject of this blog expired. I was given some rolls of FujiFilm Superia 400 only one of which had the date 2005 on. It appears the film had been stashed away in a draw. When using out of date film you are never too sure what the results will be. A rule of thumb says that for every decade out of date a film is, reduce the film speed. So in my case the film was rated at 400 so I decided to go with 200.

So I loaded the film into my Nikon FE and 50mm f2 lens and headed off to Sussex for a photo walk and talk with the family.

As can be seen from the photo above the film has a definite Magenta cast to it, which was particularly noticeable in bright conditions. This can be corrected quickly in the digital darkroom….

However not all exhibited the colour cast.

Unfortunately just six shots into the film the camera battery died. How I was able to continue will be the subject of a camera review .

In the reassuring words of the Hitchhikers guide ” Don’t Panic ” Not knowing what would happen with this film it turned out I had no cause to panic . Overall I am delighted with the results from this film 14 years past its use by date.
