Base Line

A family member has recently been diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or M.E. One way this manifests itself is a constant feeling of fatigue. For a young person who should be enjoying life to the full this is a severe blow.

To aid recovery advice has been given to establish what is called a ‘base line’. This is a series of activities that can be accomplished every day without the person feeling worn out. As a result, they have started to evaluate what is important, what strengthens their self esteem and how they maintain their joy. Of course, this will be different for each person. It is not always easy and requires some trial and error, but it is hoped that in time the person will get back on their feet.

This establishing of a ‘base line’ is sound advice for all of us.

Then I started to think how useful establishing a ‘base line’ could be when I encounter times when I’m tired or bored with my photography.

Analysing what I’m doing in my photography has got to be a good first step in determining what is important and maybe more crucially, what brings me enjoyment.

Once that’s established I can try to engage in those activities each day/week/month. In this way I find my ‘base line’. There maybe a bit of trial and error to see what works but the hope is, that in time, I can regain my photographic health.
