Landscape Mode

This is the third instalment in the series where I take a look at the scene modes on my camera to see what they actually do.

This time, if we look through the round window (a reference to to childrens tv program of the 1960/70’s I used to watch) I will be examining the program mode usually known as Landscape, hence the mountain icon. So off I go for a walk to see if I can understand what the camera is trying to do. In each series of two photos the first will be taken in Portrait mode, which was discussed last time, followed by one taken in Landscape mode.

Landscape 2

One of the first things to notice from the first set of pictures is that the landscape mode has chosen a higher f-number which will increase the amount in focus in the photo which is normally what we want in a landscape. The other thing to notice is that the sky appears more blue. This is intentional as landscape mode boosts the colours to make them more vivid.

Landscape 4

Again the f-number is higher to allow more to be in focus and the sky is more vivid.

Landscape 6

You can actually see how the background of the head of grass in the landscape mode appears sharper in the third series of photos

Landscape 8

In the penultimate series of photos there was no difference in choice of f-number. However there is something else going on here. Notice how the Landscape mode’s choice of higher shutter speed and white balance has affected the appearance of the image.

Landscape 10

The last set of photos just reinforces what has already been gleaned from the other images.

So it would seem that Landscape mode will choose a higher f-number to ensure maximum amount of focus. It also enhances the colours in the scene to make them more punchy. These are all the ingredients I want in my landscape photography.

Next time, I’ll be getting up close to the mode that helps you take close up pictures….
