Making Photography FuN with the Canon 1000 FN

Canon 1000 FN

I want you to image the family group photo that nobody really wants to be involved in. Yes we’ve all been there! How could you lighten the mood? Well what if the camera played a little Bach or Beethoven or maybe even Vivaldi as it counted down on self timer. Well that’s exactly what you get with the Canon 1000 FN. Listen for yourself by clicking on the picture below, you may need to turn the volume up a little.

With that kind of feature , clearly this camera was designed to be enjoyed and have fun to use.

Actually the specs on this camera from 1992 are impressive. Program AE, Shutter priority, Aperture priority and Manual modes are all present along with portrait, landscape, close up and sports mode. You also get more sophisticated modes such as Depth of Field AE where you chose two points of focus with the camera and it responds by selecting an aperture and shutter speed that will get everything in focus between those points. Then there is Soft Focus mode where the camera takes two exposures in one frame to render the photo with… well…soft focus. Cool!

You can even set the film ISO manually if you want. Like that! When you pop your film in it will immediately wind all the way out so that as you take each frame it winds the film back into the canister. Unlike so many cameras that only allow you to take 24 or 36 it actually counted 37 frames, nice! Did I mention exposure compensation is present too?

So I loaded the camera with Kentmere 400 and went for a walk with the family in the late summer sunshine.

I initially thought with all these bells and whistles on the camera I would get distracted away from the picture taking process; but not so. I found the camera really fun to use and very quickly found myself at the end of the roll of film.

I’m not sure why but it seems the Canon 1000FN is one of those cameras often overlooked. Given the enjoyable time I had I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. It really does get out of the way and allows you to create great images, in my humble opinion. However don’t take my word, why not give a try.
