In the movie industry, sequels can be tricky things to make successful. Think of a film that you like, that has multiple parts, in my case it would have to be Back to the Future. What was part two like? In the case of my choice, not so good. Trying to move the story on or in a different direction is fraught with pitfalls that can sink the adventure.
The same can be true with a camera. If it is perceived as a great camera this can create an issue to move it on or take it in a different direction.
Having not used a Chinon CX, which I do have, I can honestly use it without any preconceptions/expectations other than it taking photos.
The camera is substantial, weighing in at over 2lbs with a 58mm Helios lens but very well balanced in my hands. The film wind on is in a perfectly placed position and is smooth in operation. There is a very reassuring clunk as the shutter button is pressed. A half press of the shutter actuates the match needle meter. I did have a couple of times during the course of my outings with the CX II where I pressed too hard due to some resistance in the shutter button, resulting in some out of focus, incorrectly exposed photos.
The CX II has a battery test button, pictured on the left by the film rewind, which illuminates a LED built into the top of the eyepiece. Below the film rewind there is a film memo dial to remind you of what film you are currently using either B&W, T Color D or Empty.
On the top right of the camera to the right of the shutter/lock is a dedicated multiple exposure lever. A very welcome addition! On the left of the shutter release is the film/shutter speed selector which I found I could operate with my forefinger while looking through the viewfinder. Nice 🙂
The camera takes any M42 Pentax/ Practica screw thread lens. Mine is missing the self timer lever, not a big deal for me.
Aside from a couple of missed shots because of the shutter release being a little sticky I thoroughly enjoyed going out with the Chinon CX II.
Now to try out the CX 🙂
