I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was interested in seeing what differences there were between HP5+ and Fomapan. For this experiment they were both used on the same day at 400 ISO and developed with the same developer. I used the same camera and lenses but I didn’t shoot identical images. So while I may not be comparing identical images, what I have done is to place similar types of images alongside one another.
So without further ado.
The image above was taken with HP5+ and I can see a good range of tones faithfully reproduced as I remember them when I captured the image.
The same could be said of the Fomapan image below. However it is a little darker from what I recall seeing.
The area of sky in the next two images provides an opportunity to see the grain in the films.
The one above is HP5+ and the one below is Fomapan. The grain is more noticable in the Fomapan image below.
HP5+ has recorded a lot of detail in the image above and below
Equally the Fomapan has done a good job of rendering the detail in the rocks.
The next two images are HP5+
And a Fomapan 400 image to finish with.
I have been using HP5+ consistantly for a period of 6 months. However, this was my first outing with Fomapan and it is too early to form any strong opinions. Having said that though, early indications are that Fomapan has the potential for being more grainy.
Something I noticed when developing the Fomapan was the presence of scratch marks. This may be due to my handling of the film either in loading it into the film canister or the developing reel. When it came to post processing the films, the HP5+ had very little done to them if anything. The Fomapan on the other hand needed a little more attention but not a great deal more.
I look forward to spending more time getting to know the strengths of Fomapan as well as HP5+😀
