During all the years I used digital cameras, I never once felt inclined to make the 120+ mile journey to the NEC in Birmingham, England. On reflection I think that I regarded it nothing more than a trade fair. So why now when I predominantly use film?
Looking through the list of who would be there, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I would potentially find to satisfy my analogue interests. So I found myself getting up early and setting off on the two hour plus journey to the National Exhibition Centre.
First up has to be the photo walk organised by Ilford Photo. The Β£10 fee got you a goodie bag that included a roll of HP5 plus. βΊοΈπ² Dan Rubin conducted the walk around the surroundings of the NEC.
This was my first time to the NEC. I was surprised by the variety of subjects to capture.
Dan Rubin was very generous with his time, the walk lasted way more than 1 hour. Having conducted a number of my own photo walks, I know how difficult it can be to split yourself up and give everyone time and attention. His willingness to share his experience with black and white film and even throwing in a few developing techniques was very much appreciated. Thank You!
Back inside the show. It was great to meet Rachel Brewster-Wright of Little Village Photography and personally thank her for the excellent series of darkroom videos on behalf of Ilford. Those short but incredibly informative videos have been instrumental in me setting up and printing my own work. If Ilford are listening more in depth ones would be great, please.π
I got to talk to James Lane of Zone Imaging about 510 Pyro developer which seems to be getting rave reviews from what I can see. Watch out for future post about that!
PPP cameras gave a very brief but helpful talk on looking after and tips to help prolong our analogue gear.
With only 30 minutes to the end of the show and I came across the Disabled Photographer’s Society’s stand. Good job I only had 30 minutes to look through all their second hand gear. I did pick up a good condition and working Ricoh Mate which I look forward to trying out and reviewing.
Any one for a gold Nikon FA?
I clearly had a good time as I completely forgot to get lunch! This was so much more than a trade fair. Talking to so many talented young people, by my 50+ year old standards, who felt enthused and passionate about film photography was really energising. Thank you Ilford for the photo walk and for the generous amount of time you gave to my questions regarding papers.π Based on what I saw film is far from a passing fad.
Thank you!
