Camera Number Twenty Four of Three Hundred Sixty Five – Minolta Dynax 5

I was given this camera by a client around 2011 little realising that it would serve to re-ignite my passion for film photography. At that time I was very into digital SLR’s, enjoying the convenience and almost endless possibilities it offered. Why would I want to go back to 35mm film photography with all its uncertainties?

I don’t really know. All I do know is where I used the camera for the first time, the enjoyment it brought me and the desire to use it again and again. I think that is significant, the experience was memorable and left me wanting more.

The Dynax is a light camera, weighing 600gms or just over 1 1/4lbs with the 35-70mm zoom and offers a great deal in a small package. On that first time out with the camera I was able to use an out of date film overriding the DX coding and being able to set the film speed manually. I remember thinking – not as convenient as being able to shift to any ISO in a digital camera, but not far away as I had thought possible. Cool!

With so many features crammed into the Dynax, Minolta did a great job in making these easily accessible to the user. It really does handle like a digital camera, in my opinion. But don’t take my words for it, why not try one for yourself!

Little did I think that in 2023 I would be predominantly using film. How the tables have turned!
