Alas poor Yorick

Those words put into the mouth of Shakespeare’s character Hamlet , highlight human mortality. However it is technological mortality that I wish to speak of.

An important part of my experiment with 35mm film is scanning the negative and producing a digital file that can be worked on with a computer. I have been happy with the results I have been getting from this 10 year old scanner that was purchased second hand. That is until recently when some issues arose that affected the quality of my scans.

Searching the ‘inter web’ threw up a few possible solutions, but to no avail. ‘Alas poor scanner’ I fear the time has come.

On the basis of being reasonably priced and good quality I purchased the Epson Perfection V370 Photo scanner. Setup was quick and easy. I can scan 6 negatives at one time compared to the two with the previous scanner. There are many more options to play with during the scanning process that I have not used before and in time I will no doubt refine this. But what are the results from this new scanner.

I decided to re-scan an image with my new purchase and compare with the previous scanner . The image below is with my old scanner

The following image is scanned with the Epson scanner.

Wow! The quality and colour rendition are so much better, not to mention the saving in time.

I will be experimenting with the various settings over the coming weeks and months. The results will be shared in the coming posts.

I have been happy with my old scanner and learned much. However I look forward to learning more with my new scanner.
