Macs and Miranda – Miranda Sensorex first impressions

I am a Nikon digital guy. So when it came to accumulating film cameras, no surprises that I have more Nikon film cameras than any other brand. However, there is one glaring omission in my Nikon camera lineup…a Nikon Photomic of the 1960’s. With it’s interchangeable viewfinder and the ability to use at waist level, like a medium format camera, its just a cool looking camera that appeals to the inner geek.

Sadly, I cannot justify the cost. Sound familiar? Enter stage left, the Miranda Sensorex. It would appear that Miranda’s goal for the Sensorex, among other things, was to fill the desire for a pro spec body but more economically than it’s competitors. At £30 mine was a snap!

There is a lot of affection for this camera around the internet, and for good reason. There are a number of sites that go into depth on the many features of this camera. Some of the key ones, for me, include interchangeable viewfinders and the ability to use the camera at waist level, you’ll notice I’ve mentioned this twice, I like this feature a lot; through the lens average metering; depth of view button; dual lens mount to fit bayonet Miranda lenses and 44 screw mount lenses; cool looking grill where the viewfinder goes (third time). At nearly 1Kg with the 50mm f1,8 lens its not light.

The light meter, which is a match needle kind, moved half way but then stopped. Removing the viewfinder (4th time), allowed me to remove the glass screen and with a can of compressed air, blow the debris that was obstructing the needles path. Success! However when compared to a hand held meter its about two stops overexposing.

But how do I try the camera out in lockdown? I had a roll of expired FujiFilm Superior Xtra 400 which I rated at 100. Fitting the 50mm lens with a close-up lens allowed me to get really close to my subjects- my Macintosh computers.

I enjoyed using this camera very much and look forward to using it again.
