The Autumn Leaves of … Black and White?

Starting out on my journey with Black and White film I was always going to be out of my comfort zone. I don’t find it easy to pre-visualize what a scene will look like exactly, especially when reduced to monochrome. So I have a number of projects I want to accomplish that might just help make it a little easier.

One of those projects is to capture Autumn in all its monochromatic glory. Clearly, stripping away colour from a season that is all about colour sounds contrary. But what you are left with is what, in my mind, Black and White photography is all about. Shape, texture and of course light, the essence of photography.

So here goes.

I was drawn by the outline on the leaf in the photo above. The Black and White version actually enhances this.

This Geranium leaf was brown and shrivelled and I am pleased with the Black and White conversion, especially with the contrast with the leaf behind.

The sun just broke through as I took this photo. I was drawn to it because of the different colours and hoped that this would translate nicely into tones.

I was trying out a set of bellows which enabled me to get VERY close to this rose bud.

As hoped, my first foray has encouraged me and while it may be too early to say I can now pre-visualize with confidence how a Black and White photo will turn out, it definitely is a positive step forward.

To be continued…..

  1. Interesting to take away the most obvious aspect of autumn, the color, and try to figure out what attributes of autumn remain and which would render well in black and white. I think these images are a great beginning and I hope you explore this more.
