Take a Photo a Day Project Complete – What next?

To say that I am pleased I have completed my first 365 project would be an understatement 🥳. I really can’t believe a whole year has gone by. Did the earth spin slightly faster this year? The remaining few images will be posted with the last one for this Wednesday. How do I feel? What have I learned. What next?

As someone who has struggled at times to complete things, just ask my wife 😏, this project has shown me that with the right mental attitude, planning and realistic scheduling even I can see a project through to completion. Of course there have been days when I haven’t felt like taking an image and days when I nearly forgot 😫 At those times I have been grateful for the support of my family who have ‘cheered’ me on my race to the ‘finish line.’ Thank you sooo much, I really appreciate your help.

Day Three Hundred Twenty Five

They say two heads are better than one!

Using only black and white film for the year has definitely helped me to see things in that light, pardon the pun. I know it has been said before, but it’s true in my case , I now see things around me in a very different way than I did before. I hope that I continue to do so. The discipline has been a challenge at times and there have been many failures.

365 Film Project Failure

But there have also been some really pleasing successes, at least in my opinion.

Day One Hundred Sixty Six

Day Ninety Six

Reviewing the results of the last year has encouraged me, but reality tells me I have a long way to go still on this journey.

Day Ninety Seven

As someone new to developing film I am constantly questioning – I’m doing things correctly? A whole year has gone by and every week the developing tank reveals new images. I must be getting something right. 🤔 Strangely the only issue I had was this last week of the project when the film didn’t load on the spiral reel correctly causing film to stick too close which resulted in only some of the film not getting developed.

I’ve really enjoyed taking some of my favourite cameras out over the course of the year. The project has only served to confirm why I view them as favourites. But I only got to use some of my cameras. This brings me on to what next?

365 Film cameras in 365 Days

Yes you read that correctly. I will be posting on Friday the first images from my latest project, using 365 film cameras in 365 days. Now I know there are some ‘known unknowns’. I don’t have 365 cameras at the moment but enough to keep me going for a while. Where I get the remaining ones for the project..I’m not sure. I will no doubt acquire a few from a certain online auction site, charity shops or even be given some. I may have to buy some, use them and pass them on. Maybe even borrow some.

Then there is the every present reality- What happens if the film fails to develop?? Will I have backups?? What if the camera fails?? How much film do I load a camera with??

Only time will reveal the answers to these questions.

I plan to use, at least for my black and white film, a Caffenol developer. I have used this for a little while now and feel reasonably confident🫤 However this is where I may encounter the ‘unknown unknowns’- things I know nothing about.

There will be some colour images during this project as I use some APS cameras and perhaps at other times during the course of the project.

I will be posting video camera tours of the cameras I use along with the images I take on YouTube, but I will be linking them back here.

I’m really excited with this project and where it might take me on my photographic journey. I do hope you’ll come along for the ride.

    1. Many thanks. I am initially concerned about how much film to start off with. I tried a dummy run with a full 24 exposures and started with a few manual cameras only to be thrown into confusion with a Canon that wound the whole film out and ‘started’ at frame 24??? I’m inclined to try smaller amount of film but that feels more wasteful?? I have enough cameras to keep me going for the first half of the project but will have to source others?? Andrew

      1. I often take out rolls from one camera and put them in another. If you stick to one format for a week you can take all the photos on one roll and develop them at the same time. Including for 120 format, take a shot rewind, and put in another camera.
