AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4E FL ED VR £11,000; AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E VR ED £1300!! There was no way my recent bout of GAS to update my Nikon D500 lens line up was ever going to be satisfied. So to remedy this common ailment, particularly when the weather has been so good recently in the UK, I decided to go out with my Nikkor 500mm f8 Reflex lens and give my digital itch a scratch.
Wren
White Throat
Great Crested Grebe
Long Tailed Tit
Panning a fast moving bird with a manual lens was never going to work. Not bad though, me thinks.
I am soooo pleased I went out that morning. It was great to enjoy the sights and smells, even though I suffer from hay fever, and to relish the early morning light. The GAS has, I am please to say, evaporated as quickly as it came.
Knowing the limitations of my gear is, I believe, an important part of staying content with what I do have. Rather than putting up barriers as to why it’s not worth going out because I won’t get the images I want because….. is only going to make the GAS worse. Going out and using the items of equipment I do have, when conditions permit, enables me to see what I can accomplish and in turn builds up appreciation for that equipment.
Perhaps more crucially, enjoying those moments is key to good health both mentally and physically. It also safeguards the wallet😁, which has got to be a good thing.
