Repairing a King Regula L

On the label it said Jammed camera £2.50. How could I resist the opportunity to try out my repair skills/ lack of them?

The shutter lever was most definitely stuck, as was the self timer lever seen in the 12 o’clock position in the image above.

The front elements of the lens need to be removed before I could diagnose any problem.

Soooo..

Firstly the focus was set to infinity.

Then the three screws around the plastic focus ring were removed.

Then with this out of the way the front lens element could be unscrewed, making a note of where it started …

and ended.

Next, the threaded washer that secures the metal plate that helps to regulate the shutter speeds can be loosened and removed.

My first thought was that the problem lay with the self timer lever, with the red tip in the image below. However, with a little poking around this was set free and the camera shutter mechanism appeared to working well.

The problem definitely lay with the shuttle lever it would not budge. I would have to go a little deeper and remove the shutter mechanism from the camera completely. This meant I would have to remove the ring nut securing the lens located under the film plate.

The film plate is secured by four screws easily accessible . The image below shows it removed.

Using a lens spanner the nut was removed and the lens/shutter assembly could be separated from the camera chassis.

I presumed the wire connected to the lens/shutter was connected with the flash. As this was unlikely to be used it was cut to allow me to see what I might be up against.

I removed the copper looking plate, sorry no picture, and I could see the two black armatures, which you might just make out around the 11 to 1 o’clock positions. They were both spring loaded, but the one on the right seemed to be too strong causing it to lock the shutter button. So I decided to remove this spring allowing the armature to move freely out of the way. The shutter button was then freed . The other armature moves the shutter button back into position once it is actuated.

So everything seemed to be working now. I simply had to put it back together🤨

Once everything was back in place the camera worked fine, on all speeds. Result 🎉

All that remains, is for me to put a film through it.
